Healthy recipes in cooking magazineThere are two trends in modern food which may at first seem to be incompatible with one another. Firstly, there is a rise in the number of people interested in healthy eating and healthy cooking. Secondly, there is an increasing trend towards fast and efficient cooking and eating. This second trend goes along with the increasing speed of the modern lifestyle, and in the past has been one of the main reasons that the fast food industry has managed to thrive. Our interest in fresh healthy food however, is starting to threaten the fast food industry, and many fast food outlets have responded by including healthy alternatives in their menus. Many cooking magazine publications are attempting to publish recipes and information that brings these two trends together, by writing about ways to cook healthy food in a fast way, and dedicating space to specially designed and healthy alternatives to fast food. The definition of cooking is the process by which food is prepared and combined in a specific order through the application of heat. There are a wide variety of ways that food can be cooked, with different methods often having very different effects on the health giving properties of the food. The act of cooking is always going to apply a chemical transformation to food, although nutritional properties can be affected very differently. The quick and easy recipes that are presented in many modern cookery book and magazine publications normally concentrate both on starting with healthy ingredients and also cooking them in a healthy manner. Some of the many different ways of cooking food include: baking, grilling, frying, deep frying, boiling, steaming and microwaving. Some of these methods, such as frying and particularly deep frying, involve the use of lots of fatty oils which should generally be kept as far away as possible when trying to eat in a healthy manner. A lot of fast food is fried and deep fried, and many people seem to associate quick food with this method of cooking. The healthiest methods of cooking food include boiling, grilling and steaming, as little or no oil is required. Many of the recipes in cooking magazines concentrate on these methods of food preparation. Grilling is a great alternative to fried, and it can be done just as quickly as well. Boiling and steaming can take a little longer, although they are not always required for a fast food recipe. Many healthy recipes include salads as these can provide a great way to eat uncooked vegetables alongside lettuce and even fruit. Raw vegetables can also be eaten with a dip or cream cheese to create a fast and very healthy alternative. Chips are a favourite fast food item, and can still be cooked at home, however, if you bake them instead of frying them, they will be a lot healthier and just as delicious. Society does not look like slowing down any time soon, however, people are getting more interested in eating healthy food along with following HCG diets and similar programs. Cooking magazines, books and TV programs have a potentially large market of people who want quick and healthy eating alternatives to fast food. By concentrating on both the selection of healthy ingredients and on healthy ways of cooking them up, magazines can provide people with the recipes and the inspiration to get healthy without slowing down. |
